Active Shooter Training Scheduled for Aug. 8

The University Police Department (UPD) and Housing and Residential Education staff will be participating in active shooter training at the CSUSM University Village Apartments (UVA) office building on Tuesday, Aug. 8. from 1 to 5 p.m.

Active shooter training is designed to prepare UPD police officers and emergency management personnel to respond and successfully mitigate violence directed at the campus community by armed suspects, as experienced in recent years at the campuses of Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University. This training will also prepare Housing and Residential Education staff to develop personal safety practices and techniques for use during such incidents.

During the training, the UVA office and surrounding courtyard areas will be closed to all routine pedestrian traffic, and the first row of parking in Lot O immediately in front of the UVA office entrance will be closed to vehicle traffic. All other residential and work areas at the UVA will be accessible throughout the afternoon. In the vicinities of the UVA office, surrounding courtyards or Lot O, teams of police officers and role players will be shouting and screaming. Officers will be carrying distinctive red or blue plastic simulated firearms. In addition, role players will be using replica firearms discharging simulated gunfire noises. Safety officers will be present to facilitate the role play activities and intervene in any unsafe situations.

The University Police Department is committed to your safety. During the training, personnel will test the emergency notification system, consisting of a loud test message on the public address system inside and outside university buildings. Test text messages may also be sent to currently registered email accounts and cell phones. To register with the CSUSM Emergency Notification System, please click on the following link: https://www.csusm.edu/em/notification_system/em_notif_system_opt-in.html
