Altered Landscape at the CSUSM Art Gallery, Jan. 31 - Mar. 7

News Release | By Margaret Chantung

The California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) Art Gallery is pleased to present its first collaborative exhibition with the Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA). Inspired by the five landscape exhibitions that opened at the Oceanside Museum of Art in the fall of 2013, Altered Landscape features five artists from three of the exhibitions that present diverse interpretations of our natural environment. Altered Landscape will open Friday, Jan. 31 and run through Friday, Mar. 7, 2014.

Considering the dramatic changes seen in our landscape over the past century, the work in this exhibition examines the juxtaposition between natural and human-made landscapes, the human impact on nature and the evolution of our natural environment. Featured artists include Gail Roberts, Jeanne Dunn, Astrid Preston, Lee Peterson and Kim Reasor.

The four paintings from Gail Roberts’ Nothing is the Same series speaks to the theme of this exhibition through a collection of paintings that take a Southern California mountain range as a case study for how our landscape is evolving. Over a period of seven years from 1998 to 2005, Roberts captured the changing conditions in light, weather, time, seasons, natural catastrophes and urban development, resulting in 45 dramatically diverse paintings.

Also interested in urban development, Kim Reasor’s paintings explore the clash between nature and human sprawl in her offbeat nighttime cityscapes.

Lee Peterson shocks viewers with his photographs of the Salton Sea, a lake in California’s Coachella Valley that has experienced dramatic shifts in its ecosystem due to rising salinity and fertilizer toxicity.

And providing a counterpoint to these evocative interpretations, the work of Astrid Preston and Jeanne Dunn reminds us of the idyllic and romantic side of the landscape that we must continue to preserve.

The CSUSM Art Gallery, located at 1080 W. San Marcos Blvd., offers free admission to the public and is open Friday and Saturday evenings from 5 to 8 p.m. and by appointment. A closing reception will be held on Friday, Mar. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m.
