CSUSM's 10th Annual Whiteness Forum Explores Race, Power and Privilege, Friday, Dec. 5

Media Advisory | By Margaret Chantung

On Friday, Dec. 5 California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) Communication Department will host the 10th Annual Whiteness Forum, a culminating project for students in the course “Communicating Whiteness” taught by Professor Dreama Moon. The event will take place in Commons 206 from noon to 2 p.m.

Later in the evening, the Communication Department will also present a conversation with scholars titled “Color-Blindness and the Post-Racism Era: The Continuing (In)significance of Race,” from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the Arts Building, room 240.

“The Whiteness Forum and conversation with scholars are opportunities for us to look critically at ideology and everyday practices of whiteness as a way of understanding racism in the United States,” said Moon.

Both events are free and open to the public.

About the Whiteness Forum

During the event students will present tabletop posters in groups related to some aspect of whiteness and its effects on American society. This year, some of the student forum topics will poke holes in the myth that race has an impact on athletic achievement, analyze how the U.S. criminal justice system has a bias against non-whites, and question how private schools drain resources from public schools.

Attendees are welcome to walk from booth to booth to examine the presentations, many of which will include multi-media elements, and speak directly to the students about their work and their class experience.
