Campus Dedicates New Veterans Center

Campus Dedicates New Veterans CenterRear Admiral Len Hering, Commander Navy Region Southwest, and President Karen Haynes officially opened the university’s new Veterans Center with a ribbon cutting ceremony Nov. 13. The 265-square-foot facility, located on the third floor of Craven Hall, is designed to assist students as they transition from the battlefield to the classroom. With the addition, CSUSM becomes the second campus in the CSU system to have a center dedicated to veterans and their dependents.Approximately 600 identified active duty, veterans or dependents currently attend CSUSM, according to Vicki Hernandez, veterans’ coordinator.“We know there are more veterans on the campus who do not self identify, so it is our hope that the center will help get these students to become more engaged in activities geared towards veterans on the campus.”The center will provide assistance in applying for education benefits and academic advising while also serving as a place to socialize, said Hernandez.
