CSUSM Announces Dean of the College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral and Social Sciences

Adam Shapiro, Ph.D., has been named the dean of the College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral and Social Sciences at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM). He will assume his new role mid-August, providing leadership for the newly created college that will include the current Departments of Anthropology, Communication, Economics, History, Liberal Studies, Literature and Writing Studies, Modern Language Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Visual and Performing Arts and Women’s Studies. Interdisciplinary and emerging programs will include Cognitive Science, Ethnic Studies, Film Studies, Global Studies and Native Studies.“Dr. Shapiro brings a record of academic success and leadership experience to this new role,” commented Dr. Emily Cutrer, provost and vice president of academic affairs. “We are fortunate to welcome someone with his perspective and knowledge, and expect that Dr. Shapiro will bring thoughtfulness, energy and vibrancy to Cal State San Marcos and the college.”Shapiro currently serves as professor of sociology and founding chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of North Florida (UNF). Department chair since 2005, Shapiro provides administrative oversight for a multi-disciplinary department. He has focused extensively on programmatic and faculty development leading to the hiring of new faculty, the implementation of a faculty mentoring program, the enhancement of distance and hybrid courses and the creation of an accredited program in social work. Committed to community engagement and fundraising, Dr. Shapiro oversees multiple community partnerships and helped to establish his department’s first three endowed scholarships. An expert on social gerontology and family sociology, Shapiro holds a doctorate and master’s degree in sociology from the University of Texas at Austin and a bachelor’s in sociology from the University of Florida.“I am thrilled to join a student-centered institution as forward-thinking and dynamic as CSUSM.
