CSUSM appoints new director of School of Education

Press Release | By Eric Breier

Patricia Stall, a California State University San Marcos faculty member since 2003, has been appointed director of CSUSM’s School of Education.

Stall is a professor of secondary literacy in the School of Education. She teaches in the Single Subject Credential Program and mentors doctoral and master’s graduate students. Her research and publications involve student and leadership issues surrounding second language learners, American Indian students, at-risk students and teacher preparation.

“In the College of Education, Health and Human Services, we have an unprecedented opportunity to work together with our health, social work, and other colleagues and community partners to create innovative learning environments for children,” Stall said. “Those environments provide a comprehensive system that addresses the education, health, cognitive and emotional needs of children and families.

“A primary goal of our educational programs is to make a difference in the opportunity and social justice gaps for underserved children. We have a long history of positive impact and influence in the educational communities of North San Diego County. Building on that history and strength, and with innovation and opportunity, the School of Education continues to prepare the highest quality teachers and administrators possible.”

Before her appointment as the director of the School of Education, Stall coordinated the Single Subject Credential Program and served as the interim associate dean during the restructuring of academic programs at the University. In service to the University, Stall was appointed to the American Indian Task Force, most recently engaging in the strategic planning of the new department of American Indian Studies. She has been a senator and served on several Senate Committees, including chairing the Budget and Long Range Planning Committee and co-chairing the Long Range Academic Master Planning Committee.

“Dr. Stall has been an invaluable member of Cal State San Marcos’ faculty for more than a decade,” said Janet Powell, dean of CSUSM’s College of Education, Health and Human Services. “Her commitment to preparing tomorrow’s teachers will have a tremendous impact in her new role as Cal State San Marcos’ School of Education director.”

Stall has a Ph.D. in childhood and multicultural education from the University of New Mexico. She has master’s degrees in educational leadership from Western New Mexico State University and curriculum and instruction from the University of New Mexico.

Before coming to CSUSM, Stall developed and administered on-site undergraduate and graduate degree programs in teacher education for the University of New Mexico at its Gallup Branch Campus, which serves the Navajo and Zuni Reservations.
