CSUSM RecycleMania Champs Sixth Year in a RowFor the sixth year in a row, Cal State San Marcos triumphed in the Environmental Protection Agency's RecycleMania contest by winning the national "Grand Champion" title.  From January 17 to March 27, this 10-week challenge rallies students, faculty and staff to increase on-campus recycling rates beyond their collegiate competitors. The Grand Champion award is given to the campus that has the highest percentage of overall waste that is recycled during the 10-week competition period. CSUSM beat out over 600 university competitors from the United States, Canada, and as far away as Qatar to win the honor with a 71.82 percent recycle rate.CSUSM has become the school to beat, racking up six number-one rankings as Grand Champion since 2005. About RecycleManiaRecycleMania was launched in 2001 as a friendly challenge between Ohio University and Miami University to increase recycling on their campuses. The contest has expanded rapidly in nine years' time from two schools in 2001 to 607 colleges and universities in 2010, spanning 49 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. Over a 10-week period, campuses compete to see which institution can collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate.
