CSUSM Selects New Dean for College of Education, Health and Human Services

Dr. Don Chu, who previously served as the dean of the College of Professional Studies at the University of West Florida (UWF) from 2005 to 2010, has been named dean of the College of Education, Health and Human Services (CEHHS) at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM). He will assume his new role on July 1, providing leadership for the newly created college that will include the current College of Education, School of Nursing, and Departments of Kinesiology and Human Development.“After an extensive search, we identified Dr. Chu as the person with the experience and vision to lead the College of Education, Health and Human Services,” said Dr. Emily Cutrer, CSUSM Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. “His record of scholarship, his demonstrated success in fundraising, and his experience in leading a major college at a regional, comprehensive university are all indicative of a gifted academic leader.”Under his leadership at UWF, faculty professional development monies were increased markedly, graduate support multiplied and sponsored research tripled from one million dollars to almost three million dollars annually. Fundraising success to the one-million-dollar-level permitted completion of numerous college projects and enhanced scholarship support throughout the college. Since 2006 Chu's personal sponsored research includes one million dollars of federal funding to prepare combat disabled veterans for careers in teaching and social work. Prior to joining UWF, Chu was a professor in the Department of Kinesiology at California State University Chico and served as chair of the Department of Physical Education and Exercise Science for nine years.“The restructuring of historically strong academic units into the CEHHS is California State University San Marco's bold response to new challenges facing our schools, health care and human service organizations,” said Chu. “I am humbled and honored to have been chosen as CEHHS's first dean and pledge to do everything I can to help us become the college our faculty, students, university and constituents deserve."Chu holds a doctorate in education and master’s degrees in sociology and education from Stanford University, as well as a bachelor’s in government/physical education from Oberlin College.About California State University San MarcosCalifornia State University San Marcos combines the ambiance of a mid-sized, personal, modern campus with the unequaled value of the California State University.
