Institutional Review Board (IRB): Important Notice

Effective January 19, 2018, CSUSM’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) will be adopting federal updates to the Common Rule. They are designed to modernize, strengthen and make more effective the Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects that was established in 1991. Changes to the Common Rule include new exempt categories of research, removal of the requirement of submitting a continuing review of ongoing expedited research, and allowing the use of “broad consent."

These updates are intended to better protect human subjects involved in research, while facilitating valuable research and reducing burden, delay and ambiguity for researchers. For more information on changes to the Common Rule and how it may affect your research protocol, please visit:https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2017/01/19/2017-01058/federal-policy-for-the-protection-of-human-subjects

As a result of these upcoming changes, CSUSM's IRB office will be removing application and consent form templates from our website on November 17, 2017, in order to make important updates in compliance with the updated policy. Applications submitted during the 2017 winter intersession will not be reviewed until the start of the spring 2018 semester, on January 22, 2018.

New applications and templates will be available to download on January 18, 2018. Any applications submitted after January 18, 2018, must use the new application forms. Any submissions between the dates of November 17, 2018 through January 18, 2018, using old forms will not be accepted. Thank you for your patience and cooperation during this transition.
