Sustainability Week

Running from Oct. 8-12, CSUSM’s annual Sustainability Week showcases the key achievements, pioneering research and collective efforts students, faculty and staff are doing to instill sustainability principles on campus and in the community. Daily activities will explore sustainability-related issues including renewable energy, gardening, waste reduction, recycling, conservation, food practices and alternative transportation.Details on CSUSM’s events, which are free and open to the entire university community, are below.  “It’s Easy Being Green: Silent Spring at 50”12 p.m. | Library PlazaKick-off Sustainability Week and hear how Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, this year’s Common Read book, started the environmental movement 50 years ago. Learn tips on being green, participant in an opportunity drawing and show off your creative side with a group art project.Self-Guided Sustainability TourTour maps available all week from the Kellogg Library 3rd floor information kiosk. Explore the eco-features of CSUSM’s 304-acre campus and discover the many ways CSUSM is a leader in sustainability.“Thank You for Recycling Day” Event11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. | University PlazaA nationally recognized leader in recycling and waste diversion, CSUSM invites the entire campus to its eighth annual “Thank You for Recycling Day.” Enjoy free food, prizes, activities and giveaways.“Food and Energy Day” Fair11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. | University PlazaLearn about CSUSM’s sustainable energy, water and food practices from expert speakers and interactive stations. Garden and Campus Tours12 to 1 p.m. | Tour groups meet at University PlazaThree guided tours will offer an inside glimpse into a few of the sustainable projects on campus. Visit the Border Studies community garden class project, stroll through the native plants growing in the University’s Ethnobotany garden or get a behind the scenes tour of the efficient features of some of CSUSM’s LEED certified buildings. San Marcos Farmer’s Market3 p.m. to dusk | Lot BShop at the CSUSM Farmers Market, held on campus every Wednesday. Enjoy a variety of fresh, locally produced, healthful produce including San Diego grown fruit, vegetables, eggs, honey as well as live entertainment, demonstrations, food trucks, family-friendly activities and local artisan vendors.“Bike to Breakfast”7:30 a.m. | Meet at Park N Ride at Woodland Parkway and Barham Drive in San MarcosEnjoy a morning ride to CSUSM with your fellow cyclists. The ride will start promptly at 7:30 a.m. from the Park N Ride at Woodland Parkway and Barham Drive in San Marcos. All cyclists (on the group or riding separately to campus) will receive a “breakfast ticket” redeemable for brown bag breakfast served on University Plaza from 7:45 a.m. to 9 a.m. or until food runs out! Breakfast is sponsored by SODEXO. Riders will receive their “breakfast ticket” at the Craven Circle, Chavez Circle and Lot P bike racks.“Transportation Day” Fair11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. | University PlazaDiscover alternative ways to get to campus at the “Transportation Day Fair.” Learn about vanpooling and commuting communities, public transportation, ride matching and bike to work day.
