Fraternity Helping Alumnus in His Battle With Cancer
The Cal State San Marcos chapter of the Kappa Sigma fraternity is rallying for the second time to support a former member in his fight against cancer.
Kappa Sigma is holding a fundraiser this week in the name of Jason Beyer, a double CSUSM alumnus who was diagnosed early this month with porocarcinoma, a rare form of skin cancer. At Beyer’s request, donations will benefit the National Organization of Rare Diseases (NORD), which aims to improve the health and well-being of people with rare diseases by driving advances in care, research and policy.
The fundraiser ends on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 10 p.m., and donations can be made at the CrowdChange website.
“I am very grateful for the fraternity’s efforts,” Beyer said. “Being in Kappa Sigma is for a lifetime. This fundraiser will help provide much-needed funding for future grants for researchers of rare disorders and cancers. It will go a long way to help numerous other people and families from the rare disorder community.”
Beyer joined Kappa Sigma while he was an undergraduate student at CSUSM. In 2016, the fraternity held a fundraiser to support him while he was undergoing chemotherapy for testicular cancer.
Beyer earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2021 and a Master of Social Work degree in 2024.
The Kappa Sigma fundraiser is part of the national organization’s annual Military Heroes Campaign, which supports ongoing care for military veterans and their families. Beyer is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
He leads a localized version of the national Veterans History Project, an initiative by which the Library of Congress collects, preserves and makes accessible the firsthand recollections of U.S. military veterans who served from World War I through more recent conflicts and peacekeeping missions, so future generations can hear directly from veterans and better understand what they saw, did and felt during their service. His project involves the oral histories being archived both at the Library of Congress and the CSUSM library’s special collections department.
