Today, 17,000 students attend our 304-acre, state-of-the-art main campus, which is nestled in the foothills of San Marcos, California (northern San Diego County), just a short distance from some of Southern California's best beaches and an hour from the U.S.-Mexico border. CSUSM is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and was the 20th campus established in the 23-campus CSU system.

The campus has more than 1 million square feet of facilities, all of which have been constructed since 1990. Notable recent building openings include the University Student Union and Veterans Center in 2014, the Student Health and Counseling Services Building in 2015 and The Sports Center in 2016.

In spring 2018, the university broke ground on a new building for Extended Learning. When it opens its doors in fall 2019, it will be the largest academic building on campus, part of an innovative public-private partnership.
