The CSUSM Faculty Learning Community created the theme to increase awareness about palliative care and the importance of aligning healthcare decisions with personal values. Students, faculty and community members work together to get people thinking and talking about what is meaningful in their lives through a series of campus events and activities.

Tuesday, April 4

Making Our Wishes Known: Advance Care Planning Workshop for CSUSM Employees

Workshop attendees will understand Advance Care Planning and learn the step-by-step process; learn the value of planning to best navigate the healthcare system; discover how planning ensures quality of life and that one’s wishes are honored; and walk through the “5 Wishes,” a tool for planning and documenting one’s wishes.

Eldercare Housing and Placement Workshop for CSUSM Employees

Workshop attendees will understand San Diego County’s different types of housing options for seniors and in-home support options; walk through the steps of making the placement decision, determining what is most important for you and create a personal checklist; learn how to do your own quality check by gathering information from Licensing, County of San Diego AIS Ombudsman Program; discover tools, tips and community resources that can make this life transition go more smoothly for your loved one, including ongoing interactions with their Caregivers, the Director of Care and Administrators.

Exploring Palliative Care with Local Author Rhonda Hayes Curtis

Rhonda Hayes Curtis promised to give her 35-year-old dying daughter, Sherry, anything she wanted. When Sherry requested that her mother sign up for a dating site, Rhonda was panic-struck. What would people think? Only nine months earlier, Rhonda’s husband, Greg, had died from cancer. Keeping her promise, Rhonda acquiesced to Sherry’s wish. Together they completed a dating profile. Weeks later, Rhonda was immersed in two worlds: the exhilaration of falling in love and the despair of watching her daughter die. “Love at the Last Minute” is a memoir about finding courage, acceptance and love.

Time: 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.; there will be a “Swag Grab” at 5:30, followed by an Author Talk and Q&A at 6 and a book signing and dessert reception at 7:30. Bring a brown-bag dinner if you like and plan to stay for dessert and coffee after Rhonda’s talk.
