Announcing Retirement of Associate Dean of Global Programs and Services Robert Carolin

Dear campus community,

After a long and impactful career in California State University, Robert Carolin, associate dean of Global Programs and Services, has announced his retirement from CSUSM effective July 15. Having worked in international education for over 30 years and in the CSU system for 24 years (at San Jose State, San Diego State and CSUSM), Robert has dedicated himself to the promotion of international understanding and global awareness throughout his career.

In his 10 years at CSUSM, Robert has been instrumental in raising the visibility of the university’s place in the broader world around us. In particular, he has brought together the various student engagement services in international education, study abroad, American Language and Culture Institute and international admissions under one roof in support of a unifying message to students and to strengthen and streamline their activities. Likewise, in recent years, Robert has dedicated himself to support our faculty members in their efforts to broaden their outreach through a variety of initiatives, including successful grant opportunities, Collaborative Online International Learning and donor relations.

Robert also served as CSUSM student liaison for the Fulbright Program. In this role, he focused on efforts to engage students and our faculty in Fulbright’s initiatives. This effort to promote “post-graduation” options to students is part of the greater endeavor by CSUSM to promote student success and to support students after they leave campus.

When asked about his retirement plans, Robert quipped that he is ready for some much-needed rest and reflection on his career, some catching up on reading, sailing and tennis lessons and a bit of international travel. He hopes to maintain his footprint in international education while serving as a mentor to several overseas colleagues and remain as a board member for the International Student Exchange Program. He will continue to have a very warm space in his heart for his friends (really family) here at CSUSM and the support that we have shown him during his tenure.

Sincerely,

Godfrey Gibbison, Ph.D.
Dean of Extended Learning
Associate Vice President for International Programs
