Appointment of University Police Chief

I am pleased to announce that Mr. Scott Ybarrondo has been selected as CSUSM’s new Police Chief. He will begin his new position on Tuesday, June 20, 2017.

Chief Ybarrondo will provide leadership and strategic direction for the University Police Department in support of its community policing programs and the achievement of the University’s mission. He will be responsible for planning, organizing and directing the operations of the University Police Department, providing leadership and strategic direction for Parking and Commuter Services (PACS), and overseeing the Emergency Management Plan, with a focus on the campus-wide emergency management program for dealing with extraordinary emergency situations.

Chief Scott Ybarrondo joins us from the San Diego Sheriff’s Department where he most recently served as captain with over 26 years of law enforcement experience. He has strong familiarity with CSUSM due to his experience overseeing all law enforcement operations for the City of San Marcos. During that time, he worked closely with our police officers and administration, including management of the 2014 Cocos Fire.

Chief Ybarrondo earned his bachelor's degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix and is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He is a current instructor for the San Diego Regional Training Center and an adjunct instructor for Miramar College, teaching law enforcement courses.

I offer my thanks and appreciation to the members of the search committee for their dedication, efforts and significant time commitment in conducting the national recruitment to fill the police chief position: Candace Bebee, Bridget Blanshan, Stuart Ida, Karen Glover, Mark Norita, Katy Rees (chair), Melinda Swearingen, and Robert Williams.
