Call for Volunteers for Cougar Question Mart

As the start of the fall 2021 semester is upon us, so is the time to request volunteers to assist with this year’s Cougar Question Mart. As part of the Weeks of Welcome, and new this year, we will be providing directional and informational assistance for new students before the start of the semester, from Friday, Aug. 27 through Thursday, Sept. 2. Orientation Team leaders also will be offering campus tours throughout the day. Tents will be set up at the following locations:

  • Aug. 27, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., University Village Apartments
  • Aug. 28, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., The QUAD
  • Aug. 29, 8 a.m.-noon, Cesar Chavez Plaza
  • Aug. 30 -Sept. 2, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., University Hall and Cesar Chavez Plaza

We would like to have staffing for all seven days and we have a number of spots to fill. We would love to have members from across our campus community out there! If you would like to volunteer for an hour shift this year, please sign up by Thursday, Aug. 19 at https://bit.ly/cougarquestionmart.

Some of the main questions we get include: where buildings are located, where they can purchase items such as books and parking permits, where they can get advising, basic information about events going on through the first few weeks, how to add/drop courses, and overall directional help. Many resources will be provided at the table to ensure that the correct information is being given to any students who stop by.

In conjunction with Cougar Question Mart, members of our campus community are invited to wear an “Ask Me” button and serve as a resource to help students feel comfortable asking questions as they join or return to our CSUSM family. All who would like to wear the button should be willing to answer questions, provide directional assistance, and be a friendly and welcoming face for students who need help during their first few days of the semester. We request that buttons be worn through the duration of Weeks of Welcome (ending Sunday, Sept. 26). If you are concerned about not knowing the answers, don’t worry! As long as you can get them to the right place (Cougar Question Mart or Cougar Care Network), that is all we can ask for. Students can also connect with us via Microsoft Teams at Dean of Students Office Virtual Front Desk.

To pick up your button, please stop by the Dean of Students Office (USU 3500) or one of the Cougar Question Mart locations (Cesar Chavez Plaza and University Hall Plaza).

While on campus, all CSUSM students, faculty and staff should continue to wear masks/face coverings indoors. Unvaccinated individuals also will need to wear a mask outdoors when social distancing is not possible.
