Community Vigil, Discussion Close Out Domestic Violence Awareness Month

By Samantha Boden

Cal State San Marcos is hosting two upcoming events to conclude national Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The Domestic Violence Speak Out and Vigil is from 5-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19 on Forum Plaza.

The annual event features a keynote speaker, survivor testimonies, poetry and a candlelight vigil in honor of those harmed or murdered due to dating and domestic violence. Attendees are invited to come together to show support for victims of domestic violence and learn more about preventive measures to help protect the community from intimate partner crime.

The second event, Know Your Title IX Rights, is from noon-12:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24 in University Hall 100 or via Zoom

Attendees can participate in an interactive discussion about resources for survivors of dating violence, sexual assault, harassment and stalking. Title IX Coordinator Bridget Blanshan will speak alongside Chief of Police Jesus Flores and Gricelda Alva Brito, a sexual violence educator and advocate in Student Health & Counseling Services. The panel will answer audience questions and spread awareness about university services available for survivors.

All students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends and family are invited to participate in these events and show their support for domestic violence victims.

To speak with a confidential sexual violence advocate, email advocates@csusm.edu or visit the Sexual Violence Advocacy and Education website at https://www.csusm.edu/shcs/advocate/index.html.
