Cougars End UCSD's 11-year Academic Streak

By Mindy Mills

A conference-record 96 CSUSM student-athletes were named to the 2016-17 California Collegiate Athletic Association All-Academic list, topping the list for the first time and ending UC San Diego's 11-year reign at the top.

"This is an extremely proud moment for CSUSM and our student-athletes," said Director of Athletics Jennifer Milo. "Our student-athletes are setting records, and our academic records are proof that the STUDENT part of student-athlete is our first priority.

"CSUSM student-athletes are reaching news heights academically and athletically."

UCSD was second with 78. San Francisco State and Sonoma tied for third with 72. A record 825 student-athletes from the 13 CCAA schools were recognized.

To qualify for CCAA All-Academic accolades, student-athletes must be a varsity letterwinner who competed in one of the 12 CCAA-sponsored sports (men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball, men's and women's basketball, men's golf, men's and women's outdoor track and field, baseball and softball) during the 2016-17 academic year.

Student-athletes must also have achieved a grade-point average of 3.40 or higher in a minimum of 24 semester or 36 quarter units completed.
