CSUSM, Community to Stand up Against Hate

Cal State San Marcos and the broader community will come together to stand up against hate during a student-led event on campus Thursday, May 2.

Cougars in Solidarity: Together Against Hate will take place from 6-8 p.m. in the amphitheater of the University Student Union. The event is open to the public.

Cougars in Solidarity will be an evening of social justice discussions, expressions, healing and action, followed by a candle-lighting ceremony to honor those who have died due to hatred, including Lori Kaye, who died in the shooting at Chabad of Poway on Saturday.

The event was planned by multiple CSUSM students in response to the shooting. The opening remarks will be by Sophie Nadler, the president of Hillel, the Jewish organization on campus.

The candle-lighting is expected to take place at 7:15 p.m., followed by a moment of silence and multi-faith prayers and traditions.

CSUSM President Karen Haynes will appear at the event and make a statement at the end in response to the students’ call for action.

Free parking will be available in all general lots from 5-9 p.m. Please be aware that additional security will be present at this event.
