Media Advisory by Whitney Frasier

The Veterans Center at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) invites the community to a special Veterans Day observance on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 11:30 a.m. to honor all U.S. veterans. CSUSM professor and Air Force veteran Susie Lan Cassel, who is also a recipient of the Harry E. Brakebill Distinguished Professor award, will be the guest keynote speaker. This event is free and open to the public.

Cassel excelled in academics as a student graduating high school when she was only 16. She eagerly pursued higher education and by the time she joined the U.S. Air Force, she had already received a master’s degree from Harvard University. Cassel, a professor of literature and writing, was recently awarded the CSUSM Outstanding Faculty Award for Scholarship and Creative Activity.

At the event Cassel will share her journey from the U.S. Air Force to academia and the challenges veterans face as they embark on their transition to civilian life and new careers.
