Fraud Alert: End of Winter and Beginning of Spring Semester Bill Payment

An email with the subject line “END OF WINTER AND BEGINNING OF SPRING SEMESTER BILL PAYMENT” has been reportedly received by many CSUSM students. Although the title and scope of the employment offer is varied, the result is the sender offering employment and sending several months’ salary upfront.

The sender requests the student to deposit the first check and withdraw a significantly smaller amount. They are then asked to send back a money order. In days following, the bank will advise that the original deposited check is not valid, and requires the withdrawn sum to be returned; often causing significant hardship to whomever complies with this fraudulent request.

University Police is asking all recipients of this email not to send any funds. In general, do not send money to unknown individuals without verifying the validity of the request.

If you have been a victim of this fraudulent email, please contact University Police at 760-750-4567.
