Panel to Examine Role of Media in Democracy

Four journalists will participate in a panel discussion at Cal State San Marcos on the role of media in a healthy democracy.

Sponsored by the American Democracy Project at CSUSM, the free event is from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Nov. 1 in the University Student Union Ballroom. Attendees are asked to register online.

Topics to be explored include journalistic responsibility, objectivity of facts, and the role of social media and technology in an ever-changing media landscape.

The panel will be moderated by Dr. Dilcie Perez, dean of Student Life and Judicial Affairs at MiraCosta College. Panelists include:

  • Matt Hall, editorial and opinion director, The San Diego Union-Tribune
  • Scott Lewis, editor in chief, Voice of San Diego
  • Ruben Navarrette, syndicated columnist, Washington Post Writers Group
  • Alison St. John, North County reporter, KPBS

The American Democracy Project at CSUSM aims to increase opportunities for CSUSM students to practice good civic leadership and encourage spaces to openly dialogue about the health of American democracy.
