Cal State San Marcos Wins HEED Award for Fifth Straight Year

California State University San Marcos has received the 2018 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. This is the fifth straight year that CSUSM has been named a HEED Award recipient.

As a recipient of the HEED Award — a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion — CSUSM will be featured along with 79 other recipients in INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine’s November 2018 issue.

INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine selected CSUSM based on the institution’s exemplary diversity and inclusion initiatives, and ability to support a broad definition of diversity on campus, including gender, race, ethnicity, veterans, people with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ community, as well as all others.

“At Cal State San Marcos we are a diverse group of individuals — diverse in culture, religious belief, political perspective, gender and sexual orientation, nationality, age, career path, talents and abilities,” CSUSM President Karen Haynes said. “As a microcosm of society, it’s important that we continue to model the values of civility and diversity that this campus was founded on. It is our collective responsibility to tend to our campus climate every day, ensuring that our values match the everyday experiences of our students. Receiving this award for a fifth straight year is validation for the hard work we have committed to inclusive excellence.

Cal State San Marcos is one of six CSU schools to win the HEED Award this year. The others are East Bay, Fresno, Fullerton, Los Angeles and Northridge.

The HEED Award process measures an institution’s commitment to diversity and inclusion through a comprehensive and rigorous application relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees, and best practices for both.
