In Memoriam: Dannis Mitchell

It is with heavy hearts that we share that a deeply devoted member of our community, Dannis Mitchell, library services specialist in the University Library, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, March 22.  

Dannis’ connection to our campus began at the university bookstore in 1990, when we were still the north satellite of San Diego State University. She officially began her employment with CSUSM in June 1992, and received her 25-year service recognition in 2017.  

Dannis’ contributions to every aspect of the Library, particularly to Collections Management and Technical Services, Archives, the Media Library, and the Disaster Response Team, cannot be overstated. However, she was far more than a valued coworker. Dannis was a true, long-term friend to many and a wonderful presence throughout campus – she was a vibrant spirit always quick with enthusiasm, humor, and positivity, as ready to pitch in and help as she was to laugh.

Information on a memorial service will be shared as soon as it is available, and several efforts are already underway in the University Library to help celebrate Dannis’ memory. The Library plans to design a book plate in honor of Dannis’ many contributions to the gift book program, and a commemoration fund has been established – donations to this fund will help support the creation of a campus memorial in Dannis’ honor.
