Student Media Festival Celebrates Innovative Projects

Cal State San Marcos will host the 19th annual Student Media Festival on Friday, May 12, bringing together hundreds of students, faculty, family and community members, and professional media makers in a powerful celebration of learning and fun.

Student Media FestivalThe program begins at 7 p.m. in the theater (Room 111) of the Arts Building on campus. A reception will precede the event at 6.

The Student Media Festival is a competitive, juried event that marks the culmination of the spring semester each year. Hosted by students, the festival presents, celebrates, publicizes, shares and archives the innovative media projects being produced by the many disciplines at CSUSM.

The festival will take place in person after the 2022 event, held online, drew hundreds of students, faculty, staff, friends, family and professional film and video makers, who came together to celebrate diverse fictional and documentary projects of less than 15 minutes in length.

Students have landed paid work from their exposure at the festival and gone on to careers in creating media in a variety of sectors, including nonprofit organizations, educational institutions and commercial entities. Awards and prize categories may include:

  • Best new voice (the dean’s award)
  • Best social justice project
  • Best fiction narrative
  • Best documentary
  • Best experimental film
  • Best editing
  • Best sound design
  • Best interactive media
  • Audience award
  • Interactive media

CSUSM student work from any department can be submitted for jury review and potential awards. Work can include projects made at CSUSM over the last two academic years.

The jury consists of distinguished students, alumni, teachers, community leaders and members of the media.
