Students Honor César Chávez with Day of Service

By Christine Vaughan

More than 50 CSUSM students and staff volunteered part of their spring break to honor the life and legacy of civil rights activist César Chávez with a special all-campus community service day on March 31, 2014. For the inaugural Day of Service, teams of students spent a collective 200 hours beautifying a community garden and painting a local nonprofit center.

“César Chávez and his work hold great meaning to our campus,” said Anna Fleming, service partner liaison. “A lot of what he spoke about anchored on the fundamental idea that as a community we need to help others and be of service to our neighbors.”

CSUSM’s César Chávez Day of Service coincided with César Chávez Day, a state holiday held in remembrance of Chávez, who is revered as one of the greatest American civil rights leaders.
