Teresa Macklin to Retire as Chief Information Security Officer

After more than 27 years of service to CSUSM, Teresa Macklin will be retiring Dec. 30. Since 2016, Teresa has served as the campus’ chief information security officer and associate dean of IITS, a role that is built upon an impactful legacy of campus and system-level leadership in the areas of technology and informational security.

First hired as a systems software analyst in September 1992, Teresa began service at CSUSM in a hands-on technical role before assuming one of IITS’s many leadership roles. Starting in January 1996, Teresa was promoted to the director of academic computing. Over the years, she took on many leadership responsibilities, responding to the changing needs of the campus and IITS. Her service included time as the director of Academic Technology Services, interim dean (for six months in 2002) and the associate dean since December 2013.

As a higher-ed IT pioneer, Teresa was responsible for bringing technologies to CSUSM that are now commonplace and routine to our connected campus, but at the time many were cutting edge. Teresa also played a major role in the planning and design of the Kellogg Library, and many of the unique elements were influenced by her creative and forward thinking. Most importantly, Teresa was one of the CSU system’s first information security officers, and as a system leader in the field, she helped to craft many of the system’s security policies that are the foundation of the entire CSU security program. Teresa was also instrumental in establishing CSUSM’s Master of Science in Cybersecurity program and since the program’s inception, she has served as the program director and lecturer for many courses. After retirement from the CSU, Teresa will continue to serve in the role of program director for the cybersecurity master’s with Extended Learning for the foreseeable future.

Teresa’s remarkable body of work, dedication to the community and service to the campus will certainly continue to shape IT security services at Cal State San Marcos for many years to come.
