A Leader in Advancing Undergraduate Research

Long before undergraduate research gained popularity on college campuses, CSUSM has been a leader in engaging students each year in nationally recognized, cutting-edge research. This week, CSUSM joins the U.S. House of Representatives in celebrating National Undergraduate Research Week, April 16-20.“We have been a leader in advancing undergraduate research regionally and nationally,” said Gerardo González, dean of Graduate Studies and associate vice president for Research at CSUSM. “Under the guidance of our faculty, students learn hands-on skills and apply them to innovative research projects. As a result of excellent faculty mentoring, CSUSM students are well prepared and highly competitive for prestigious professions and graduate schools.”Last year, CSUSM students outperformed their sister CSU institutions at the statewide Student Research Competition, tying for first place with San Francisco State, with the most students ranking first or second place in their division. This year ten undergraduates and two graduate students will represent CSUSM at the 26th annual statewide competition held at CSU Long Beach on May 4-5.Hear firsthand from the finalists how their research is leading to new discoveries and the impact it has on their education and future aspirations.
