CSUSM Appoints Dean Mike Schroder to Lead International Programs

Michael “Mike” Schroder, dean of Extended Learning at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM), has also been appointed associate vice president of International Programs with responsibility for expanding and enhancing the University’s multi-faceted global education programs and ensuring international perspective among CSUSM graduate, undergraduate and professional development students, as well as faculty and staff. Schroder will also leverage the extensive international expertise of faculty in the University’s outreach to local businesses.The selection of Schroder for this new role was a natural. “A consensus-builder and visionary since he arrived at CSUSM, Dean Schroder has established a reputation for successfully working with the colleges at the University and area business and community leaders to develop innovative academic programs that fuel economic growth. This skill set is exactly what we need as we expand CSUSM International Programs,” said Emily Cutrer, CSUSM provost and vice president of Academic Affairs.   International programs at CSUSM encompass study abroad programs for approximately 200 students per year at 20 partner universities worldwide; international student recruitment and advising for roughly 300 students per year; English language and American culture training for students and  international professors/instructors each year via the American Language and Culture Institute (ALCI); international faculty exchange and research collaboration; Fulbright scholarship opportunities; and professional training and certificate programs for international businesspeople. These programs operate under the auspices of Extended Learning.   According to the California Colleges for International Education (CCIE) 2011 Fact Sheet, it takes roughly three international students to open a section, thereby making it possible for another 30 more California students to receive college instruction.
