CSUSM Hosts Pilot Program to Elevate Trauma-Informed Care

In support of Cal State San Marcos’ long-standing commitment to sustain and elevate a culture of care, a pilot program titled “Bridging the Gap: Trauma-Informed Care Leadership Workshop” was recently held with campus partners and student leaders to strengthen campus connection, responsiveness and equity to better serve students.

Aaron Hye, peer outreach and student engagement coordinator in the Office of Inclusive Excellence, developed the initiative. The initial workshop gathered leaders across CSUSM for a four-hour discussion and a series of meaningful, skill-building exercises focused on student-centered care.

“The only requirement to participate is to be vulnerable,” Hye said.

Hye said the workshop taught people to view others through an individual lens.

“People have backstories,” he said. “People have histories and people have baggage they come with, so when you deal with people, you have that in mind.”

Early feedback has underscored the value of establishing a shared framework grounded in empathy, accountability and cross-campus collaboration. Hye said he hopes to host more of these workshops in the future.
