CSUSM to Host Memorial Day Observance on May 11

Press Release | By Eric Breier

California State University San Marcos will honor our nation’s fallen with a Memorial Day Observance on Thursday, May 11.

The Observance is being dedicated to Marine Sgt. Rafael Peralta, a Mexico City native who grew up in San Diego. Sgt. Peralta sacrificed his life to save fellow Marines by using his body to cover a grenade in Fallujah, Iraq, on Nov. 15, 2004.

The USS Rafael Peralta, a destroyer named for Sgt. Peralta, will be commissioned in July at Naval Air Station North Island.

Thursday’s Observance is at noon in front of the Veterans Center on CSUSM’s campus followed by a reception on the deck.

Attendees will have the opportunity to honor a service member or veteran who has died with dog tags to be placed on the wall of the Veterans Center by making a $5 donation.

The Student Veterans Organization will donate this year’s Dog Tag Memorial proceeds to the commissioning of the USS Rafael Peralta to welcome the destroyer and its crew to San Diego this summer.
