American Indian Student Center to Host Open House
Cal State San Marcos’ American Indian Student Center will be hosting an open house next week.
The center, which is nicknamed The Nest, is calling the event “Miiyu: Where Story Lives.” It will take place on Tuesday, March 17 from noon to 2 p.m. in USU 3400.
The open house will offer the campus community a chance to visit the center, learn more about its role in supporting American Indian and Alaska Native students, and recognize the many partnerships and collaborations that contributed to bringing the space to life. The Nest, which opened last fall under assistant director Tommy Devers, serves as a place of connection, cultural grounding, mentorship and community for American Indian students at CSUSM.
The program will begin with a blessing, followed by brief remarks from campus leaders and community partners, and the unveiling of a new mural created by American Indian studies professor Eric Tippeconnic (Comanche) and Lanise Luna (Kuupangaxwichem/Mescalero Apache). The mural reflects the living stories, histories and futures carried by American Indian students and communities connected to the university.
Following the unveiling, guests are invited to stay for a reception and an opportunity to connect with colleagues, students and community members.
