Faculty, Staff Make a Difference During Pandemic
As Cal State San Marcos faculty and staff continue to go above and beyond on behalf of students and the campus community during the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re pleased to highlight some of the campus heroes as nominated by students and colleagues.
Elena Gonzales, lecturer, chemistry and biochemistry
Gonzales was nominated both for her ability to get organic chemistry labs into a teachable format and her work helping students overcome challenges during the pandemic.
“Dr. Gonzales has been so supportive, encouraging, and she genuinely cares about teaching my peers and me,” the student nominator wrote. “Dr. Gonzales goes above and beyond for her students, especially throughout this past year. She is a great chemistry professor, she allows the students to open up to her and gain experience, and she is willing to connect with her students in a special way. …
“Dr. Gonzales has made a difference in my college journey, and I know I'm not the only one.”
Scott Gross, associate vice president for industry partnerships, Planning and Academic Resources
Gross was lauded for his ongoing service to support the campus in myriad ways during the pandemic, including his critical roles in Graduates on Parade last year and serving as the liaison to San Diego County health officials.
“Due to Scott’s planning and investment in community partnership, CSUSM was able to serve the campus and community through a testing location, vaccine site and alternative space for the arts,” the nominator wrote. “Scott is a behind-the-scenes leader dedicated to the success of our students, faculty and staff. Through his attention to detail and fostering of community partnerships, CSUSM has been an active partner with San Diego County.”
Ericka Wells, case management specialist, Cougar Care Network
Wells, who has worked with the Dean of Students Office for two years, was highlighted for her work supporting students who were COVID-positive or had a family member who was ill or died as a result of COVID.
“Ericka was perfect for this role due to her past experience with palliative care and working with HIV-positive clients,” the nominator wrote. “Ericka has been instrumental in providing care to our students. She has assisted students with academic, financial and mental health during this difficult time. She networks students with resources, provides a listening ear and helps them get back on track to be successful.”
