Awards and Accolades: Kinesiology Team Receives Top Honor

A team of four Cal State San Marcos undergraduate students and kinesiology professors Jeff Nessler and Sean Newcomer have received Sports Engineering’s 2020 best paper award for their paper, “Effect of wetsuit outer surface material on thermoregulation during surfing.”

The students who contributed to the work included Kara Luong, Maya Saulino, Morgan Simmons and Carly Smith.

Sports Engineering noted that the strong field of finalists required a tiebreaker vote by Jonathan Shepherd, the president of the International Sports Engineering Association. The CSUSM team’s paper was only the second surfing manuscript ever published in Sports Engineering.

Social work professor named research fellow

Professor Jimmy Young is among 26 social work experts from across the U.S. and Canada selected as research fellows for the Social Work Health Futures Lab, which is sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and hosted at Portland State University.

Young will work on several projects and receive training to become a certified futurist during the 18-month fellowship.

Nursing program among best in West

The nursing program has been ranked 21st in California and 44th in the West by Nursing Schools Almanac, which recently released its 2020 rankings of the best U.S. nursing schools.

Nursing Schools Almanac collected data on more than 3,000 institutions, and only 20% made its list of the best nursing schools in each geographic region.
