University Launches Crowdfunding Platform

By Christine Vaughan

Giving to a special project or initiative at Cal State San Marcos has never been easier, thanks to the university’s new peer-to-peer fundraising platform, Cougar Crowdfunding.

Cougar Crowdfunding helps bring groups of donors together to fund specific projects during a time-constrained campaign. In this peer-to-peer model, projects raise modest sums of money, typically $2,000-$5,000 to fund special projects. All of CSUSM’s academic programs, colleges, faculty, student groups and university departments are eligible to apply to be a Cougar Crowdfunding project, which are facilitated through the Office of Annual Giving Programs in University Advancement.

“Cougar Crowdfunding will surely have a positive impact in our ongoing efforts to implement innovative approaches to fundraising and to build an inclusive culture of philanthropy at CSUSM,” said Jessica Berger, vice president for University Advancement.

The platform officially launched with its first project in the summer, as members of the CSUSM community rallied together to fund a memorial bench in honor of Valissa Smith Middleton, who was a cherished friend and colleague in Distribution Services.

Through Cougar Crowdfunding, donors are able see how much is being raised in real time for any specific project and project managers can easily track how close they are to reaching their goals.

Visit the Cougar Crowdfunding webpage for frequently asked questions and how to get started.
